Four Essential Study Tips for Exams
1. Get comfortable
Studying for graduate school exams often take a lot of time. For this reason, it is important to make sure you are comfortable in your study environment. Making sure you are comfortable might mean choosing a study space that you enjoy being in; whether that be a library, a co-working space, your home, or a student lounge. It could also mean that you have necessary snacks and beverages that will help sustain you through your study session. You might also need other things to ensure you are comfortable like a blanket or warm socks. The environment you curate will help make sure you are able to focus and spend the necessary time learning material.
2. Start early (less stress)
Although people have many approaches to exam study, I always recommend starting early so there is less stress leading up to the exam. Giving yourself time allows for flexibility and comfort in your study approach.

3. Make an outline in chronological order
Whenever you are tasked with understanding or memorizing a lot of information, it may be helpful to outline all of the material in chronological order, using all of the material that has been provided to you whether it be lecture notes, textbooks, powerpoints, or class handouts. This helps you consolidate all of the information about one topic and ensure you are not missing any critical information you might need to know for the exam. Once you have developed your outline, I recommend highlighting, color-coding, and underlining as you read and study the material. I would read through the outline as many times as is necessary for you to have the material committed to memory. This approach also helps you easily identify sections you are having trouble with. Once you have a thorough understanding of the bulk of the material you can then go back through the sections you feel weaker on until you feel you have a better understanding.
4. Study with others once you know the material
Once you are confident you know the material well, it can be helpful to review the material with others, whether it be cohort members, friends, or any person who will listen to you talk about the subject matter. There are many ways to do this, whether it be quizzing one another, pretending you are giving a lecture, or talking through more difficult aspects of the material.
