Grad School Wardrobe Essentials
1. Basic Tops
A staple in my wardrobe is basic tops that can be layered with blazers, cardigans, and scarves. I have several in the colors nude, white, and black. I ensure that these tops are fitted so that they serve as a good base layer for layering. They can be sleeveless, short-sleeved, or long-sleeved. It is important that these shirts are made from quality material so that they can be layered with your nicer blazers and cardigans.
I have heard great things about these bodysuits from express (Sleeveless Bodysuit and Long Sleeved Bodysuit). I have not tried them yet, but plan to get them on black, nude, and white to try them out as layering pieces!
2. Cropped Pants
I love cropped pants! They can be dressed down with flats, or easily dressed up by adding a heel. They come in so many different colors and patterns that the possibilities are endless for putting together unique outfits without a lot of thought.
Here are different ways I have styled cropped pants:
3. Something to Keep You Warm
Scarves
Scarves are my favorite accessory! I have them in all colors and sizes. My favorite scarves are blanket scarves because they can be tied in so many different ways, and then if you find yourself freezing in a lecture or seminar, you can simply wrap up in the scarf to stay warm. Here are some ways I style scarves:
Cardigans
I love oversized cardigans as a chic way to stay warm and cozy. These can be paired with not only the cropped pants and basic tops we discussed earlier but also skirts. I typically grab a neutral colored cardigan (i.e., black or nude) to ensure it matches with whatever I have on that day.
Blazers
Blazers are a great way to dress up a casual outfit quickly if needed for a presentation or important meeting. Of course, I love neutral colored blazers, but blazers in fun colors and patterns layered over a neutral base layer is a great way to make a fun and put-together outfit.

4. A Good Bag
Tote Bag
My favorite tote bag is the Longchamp Le Pliage Tote in size large. I love that the bag is light and does not add extra bulk. This is key for all of the stuff you may have to carry around during a typical grad school day.
Backpack
Instead of a tote bag you may prefer to carry a backpack. Here are some that would pair nicely with a grad school look: CLUCI Womens Backpack Purse and KROSER Laptop Backpack.
Rolling Bag
In grad school I often carried a rolling briefcase. A little much, I know, but some semesters I had so many things to carry and I did not want to strain my shoulders. I loved knowing that I could put whatever I wanted in the rolling briefcase and not have to worry about weight. Here is the one that got me through grad school: Mobile Solution Mobile Office Softside Carry-On Spinner.
5. Comfortable Shoes
Flats
You will find that investing in comfortable flats to wear with your casual and business casual looks will serve you well in grad school. I, of course, recommend black and nude pairs. Investing in fun colors and prints could also really add to a solid colored outfit.
Heels
A conservative heel is good to have on hand for when you need to be more dressed up. My favorite heels are a 3-inch heel from Payless (link here: Payless Comfort Plus By Predictions Womens Karmen Pump). These heels are so comfortable! I have them in black and nude in matte and patent leather. My feet are always so comfortable in those shoes.
