Want to know about my favorite deep work focus playlists I think everyone should have? There are the playlists you may find yourself queuing up over and over during grad school and beyond.
Grad school often requires long hours reading, writing, and doing data analyses. If you are like me, background noise is sometimes helpful in helping your focus on the task at hand. As a faculty member, I still spend long hours reading, writing, and doing data analyses so I am giving you my go-to playlists that help me focus!
You are going to see all of the playlists I use for deep focus work.
After making note of these playlists for deep focus work you will have many options to choose from to set the right vibe for your next study day!
This post is all about my favorite playlists for deep focus work.
Playlists for Deep Focus Work
1. White Noise
For deep focus work, especially when I need to mask noise around me, I like to listen to standard white noise. When you google white noise, you might notice there is also “pink noise” and “brown noise,” which present a similar sound at different frequencies. You can find all types of white, pink, and brown noise options on any music streaming platform. There are also options on YouTube as well as on different phone apps such as Relax Melodies.
2. Lo Fi Hip Hop Beats
Lo Fi hip hop beats set a great vibe for a long study day! I would describe the sound as jazzy hip hop and there are many ways to find this music. You can look into Chillhop – which is what originally introduced me to this sound, or Chilled Cow. If you search “lo fi hip hop” on your favorite streaming platform you will also find many other versions and playlists of this style of music.

3. Jazz
I love listening jazz while I work. An older jazz sound as background noise seems to put me as ease if I have a long work day ahead of me. Aside from streaming platforms, if you search “morning jazz” into YouTube you will find tons of relaxing jazz options to use as background noise as you tackle your to-do list!
4. Ambient Noise
Listening to various types of ambient noise is another great way to encourage focus. Ambient noise is not music, but rather clips of sound everyday sounds that you can listen to that block out other background noise and can give you a sense of calm. My favorite computer and phone app for ambient noise is WhiteNoise app. This one is my favorite because there is a mix pad where you can mix all of your favorite sounds together in various ways. You can even select what direction you want the sound to come from! My favorite mix I have made so far is rain, thunder, and wind chimes, with the sound of an occasional car driving by!
5. “Study with Me” Videos
Number five is not really a playlist but it is key to helping with my productivity on some days. Many people on YouTube make “Study with Me” videos where they set up a camera to film them while they study or work through their to-do list for the day. It’s amazing how the visual of someone else working along with the background noise of them typing, turning pages, and writing can really help you hone on the work you need to be doing for the day! Some of my favorite channels for “Study with Me” videos are: TheStrive Studies and elloitsangela.
